Convention Registration

The Masonic Fraturnity is made up of a group of men who help each other to become better men (as a means of better serving others). Taken from the printed program: A Mason is a man who professes a faith in God. As a Man of faith, he uses the tools of moral and ethical truths to serve mankind. A Mason binds himself to
likeminded men in a Brotherhood that transcends all religious, ethnic, social, cultural, and educational differences. In fellowship with his Brothers, a Mason finds ways in which to serve his God, his family, his fellowman and his country.

About 150 Mason Attended the 8th District Convention in Elberton on Saturday at the beautiful Elberton Masonic Lodge.  The purpose of the Convention was to conduct business of the district and to elect new officers.

Joe Colvard

Joe Colvard was the District Master this year and the great turnout was the result of his effort during the year to meet with each Lodge in the district which covers Northeast Georgia – some 30 Lodges representing 30 local communities and a membership of over 2,500. His visits were designed to encourage more attendance and participation in Masonic activity in each individual Lodge and in the district.

The Grand Master of Georgia (all Lodges) Leonard Buffington was the honored guest who installed the new officers in a serious ceremony that inspires dedication to service. After the meeting, he also presented each lady with a lapel pen that dipicted doves lined up to represent the branches of a tree with the inscription on the outer circle, “She Is The Very Tree of Life to Those Who Embrace Her.”

A report was given on the status of the Masonic Home in Macon which is a long standing co-educational and complete environment home dedicated to children who for some reason need more positive surroundings in which to grow, learn and mature. There are 31 children living there currently and a new hall has just opened for additional boys. All Lodges give generously to the Home on a continuing basis and the children have all essential necessities for a loving relationship with each other and the staff or rather the “family” as the children call them.

After the business was completed, the Brothers dispersed for a delicious noon meal of chicken fillet, southern potato salad and seasoned bacon & beans topped with slices of various flavors of cake and tea prepared and served by the loving hands of the wives of some of the attending Masons. Special thanks to Mrs Marrie Colvard who coordinated the meal.

While the Masons were meeting, the ladies were treated to a tour of the Elberton Granite Museum and to “Elberton’s Most Unusual Granite Monument.” Elberton is the world’s capitol of granite production and its granite  products are distributed all over the world.

Steve Nelson, 8th District Master

At the conclusion of the Convention, the degree of Past Master was bestowed on all past masters (about 70), a ceremony to remind those members of their committment in years past as masters and servants of their local lodges and communities.

The Convention will convene again next year in the Spring with newly elected District Master Steve Nelson presiding.
