Happy Veterans Memorial Day

In a new rose garden-graced location in Rose Hill, the City of Winder has placed a new flag pole and markers for each of the wars in which Barrow Countians lost their lives while serving on active duty. New and larger American flags fly over each of the white crosses placed in memory of each of those soldiers. At the ceremony, buddy poppies will be handed out by ladies of the VFW auxiliary. Donations to the VFW Buddy Poppy program supports veterans’ welfare and well-being of their dependents.
Many traditional observances are held on Memorial Day including visits to cemeteries and memorials across the country. Volunteers often place American flags on the graves of fallen veterans.

Washington, DC. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m., with the President generally visiting Arlington National Cemetery. This year, Vice President and Mrs. Joe Biden will represent the White House. Flags around the country are also flown at half-mast from dawn until noon as an honor to lost heroes.

Washington, DC. Some 250,000 bikers called the “Rolling Thunder” are now rolling into Washington to stop at Independence Square to celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, May 31, 2010.

Memorial Day – originally called “Decoration Day” – unofficially began in 1865 as a way to honor fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. In fact, because of lingering resentment over the war, many Southern states did not observe the holiday until after World War I (they opted for their own Confederate Memorial Day). Memorial Day has since become an occasion to honor fallen soldiers from all wars.
