First Friday on Main Street in October
10-7-11

First Friday brings out many young families with small children. In Watkinsville, the area around the Watkinsville First Christian Church (parking lot and playground) and the area in the front yards of the Dolvin building and the Eagle Tavern were most suited for the activity. Town Center usually sees a few who wish to visit the restaurants there. About 75 people including children attended this time.

One center of attraction seemed to be the little cho cho train (10 seats) which was full for each circular ride for the first hour. By 7:30, it was getting too dark to ride. The train once belonged to Antioch Christian Church, but was given to Watkinsville First a few years ago. The 10 commandment signage on the outside of train was replaced with the words “Jesus Loves The Little Children of the World” It was a big hit.

Another attraction was miniature golf – an 5 x 12 ft green built by Robert Bargfrede – a member of Watkinsville First for Relay for Life a few years ago. It contains 3 holds and a few obstacles, but is mastered by 5 and 6 year olds easily to the delight of their parents.

Another attraction was face painting, free popcorn and blowing up balloons in animal shapes. Roasting marsh melons was being enjoyed by the adolescents in front of the Spa & Patio Furniture vendor. A 1-room shack with a door and one window was the attraction of a haunted house with weird sounds coming from who knows where as the children screamed and hollered running in and out in the dark. Just an empty shack and the thought of goblins & ghosts inside was enough to get goose bumps.

The Watkinsville City Council sponsors First Friday every month as a way for family to enjoy each other in a safe and free environment.
